2012 has officially started, and most people would definitely want to start the year right. A good way to do this is to come up with a great health plan that will allow you to stay fit and disease-free all year long. But of course, this health plan can never promise that you won’t get down with a flu or catch the cold virus. Still, devising an effective health plan that will work the whole year will decrease your odds of getting ill.

While there is still no known cure for the common cold, there are ways to prevent it — by boosting your immune system. Below are great tips that will not only help you battle the common cold but will also aid you to stay healthy the whole year.

Get adequate sleep and rest. Everybody is required to have at least 8 hours of sleep. Sleep deprivation can weaken the immune system. Remember the body needs enough rest in order to recuperate. Therefore, if possible, try to get 6-8 hours of sleep every day.

Include more fruits and vegetables in your diet. Staying healthy also means eating healthy. Aim for more servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. The more natural foods you include in your diet the better. Fruits and vegetables are packed with essential vitamins and minerals that the body needs to function properly.

Stay active and keep yourself hydrated. Regular exercise can help you maintain an acceptable weight in order to keep the flab away. In addition to that, exercise can encourage muscle development which in turn can boost your metabolism. Exercising regularly will also allow you to tone and sculpt your body. Aside from exercising, you should also drink 8-10 glasses of water every day. Hydration is important to stay healthy. The best part is that water is calorie free, so even if you drink too much you do not have to worry about gaining weight.

Increase your fiber and whole grain intake. Fiber and whole grains should be a part of a healthy and balance diet. Instead of eating white bread, opt for whole wheat bread. Keep hunger at bay by eating all-natural cereals or a bowl of oatmeal before going to school or work.

Take vitamin supplements. To supplement your diet, you can take vitamin supplements. But of course, before you do so, it is best to consult your doctor first to know what kind of supplement best suits you.

Stay away from fatty and oily foods. Oily and fatty foods are the major cause of heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, you should definitely stay away from these kinds of foods. However, this is not to say that you have to completely veer away from taking in fats. In fact, fats is an essential part of a healthy diet but only the good fats. Some of the sources of healthy fats include fish and nuts.

If you have the money, it would be wise to have a physical check-up at least once a month to ensure that you are in tip top shape.
